Optimising network topologies

Optimising network topologies to increase efficiency

An efficient distribution network has as few operating resources as possible. This saves both investments and operating costs. Voltage Regulating Distribution Transformers with ECOTAP® VPD® help to increase the efficiency of network sections. This is done, for example, by merging two local networks to save one local network station or by not building another one.

The prerequisite is to be able to design a single transformer in such a way that its power is sufficient for the load or feed-in of the enlarged network area. The maximum control range of on-load tap-changers is of central importance, because it determines the supply radius.

Voltage Regulating Distribution Transformers (VRDTs) dynamically adjust the voltage and can significantly increase the supply radius of a local network station. The ECOTAP® VPD® on-load tap-changer offers the large control range required for this. Installed in transformers of different power classes (manufacturer-independent up to approx. 36kV as well as 8,000kVA), it is the standard for all network types. Due to their compact dimensions, regulated distribution transformers have a similar footprint to unregulated ones. Designed for 500,000 switching operations, it is maintenance-free over the entire life of the distribution transformer. Voltage regulation is possible autonomously via an integrated algorithm or externally via SCADA; in addition, it can be controlled depending on the direction of the power flow.

Conventional transformers also pass on voltage changes from the medium-voltage grid with a constant transformation ratio. With VRDT, the transformation ratio is adjusted automatically and without interruption. This decouples the voltage levels of the medium and low-voltage grid and the voltage at the consumer can always be kept constant.

Your advantages:

  1. Largest possible supply radius for local network stations due to extensive control range

  2. Can be used in any existing local network station due to its very compact dimensions

  3. Low investment and operating costs due to freedom from maintenance and long service life

  4. Receipt of valuable additional information through digital connection with simultaneous possibility of actively influencing network events
