The energy sector and industry have their hands full. The expansion and modernization of global infrastructures must be fast and sustainable. The more fossil fuels and CO2 are saved, the more sustainable the industrial site, the grid and the individual operating equipment will be. With our components and services, we ensure a longer service life and safer operation.
Making transformers more sustainable
Durability, resource conservation and efficiency are central pillars of a sustainable economy. With our products and services, we are making a significant contribution to the energy transition and therefore to a climate-friendly future.

Many small adjustments, big effect
All components in a transformer have the potential to work more efficiently, conserve resources and operate more independently. To achieve this, they must be durable and low maintenance. Our on-load tap-changers have been such since their introduction because these properties are part of our DNA. However, because we do not rest on our laurels when it comes to quality, we put a lot of time and passion into continuously improving our range and developing innovations for the energy industry.
As "THE POWER BEHIND POWER", we actively contribute to reducing the CO2 footprint - wherever we provide components or support asset management through our services. Our focus is just as much on maintaining existing equipment through retrofit-capable solutions as it is on developing new technologies to digitalize entire fleets. And because every system ages, our products are processed in such a way that our customers can have them easily and almost completely recycled at the end of their life cycle in line with the circular economy.
Six aspects for more sustainable operation
-
Longevity
New equipment must be robust and remain in use for as long as possible to save resources. AI-based condition monitoring by ETOS® or maintenance services such as FLEETSCAN 2D extend the service life of equipment.
-
Low maintenance
In addition to maximizing service life, we are always working to minimize maintenance efforts. This means that many of our components are maintenance free for their entire service life. This gives industry and the energy sector the advantage of having to keep fewer personnel and expertise on hand.
-
Efficiency
All of our components and services increase the efficiency of the entire system. Our digitalization solutions in particular provide precise status analyses and recommendations for action that optimize maintenance and operation. They also make it possible to further increase the integration of renewable energies.
-
Product innovation
From new on-load tap-changers to sensor technology, software updates, digitalization or even new synthetic insulating oils and vacuum technology - we are actively shaping the future of energy supply. That is why we are working with research institutes to develop new products and improve our portfolio.
-
Repairability
We design our products so that they are easy to repair even in the unlikely event of a fault - for example, by using vacuum technology and leaving most of the on-load tap-changer untouched. Such retrofit measures correspond to a CO2 saving of around 50 percent. In addition, our global repair service works on site at customers’ premises, eliminating the energy-intensive transportation of a transformer to a workshop.
-
Recycling
Sustainable production requires that the end of a life cycle also be considered. MR components are made from high-quality, long-lasting raw materials and customers can have our components recycled and resell the raw materials. This enables us to achieve a recycling rate of up to 95%, depending on the material and product.
„As THE POWER BEHIND POWER, we offer solutions that enable industry and the energy sector to contribute to a sustainable world.“

Efficiency also means simplifying systems. Our new ECOTAP® VI eliminates the need for additional add-on assemblies thanks to the shared oil supply. This saves space, material and insulating fluid compared to conventional vacuum interrupters, as well as an additional 25 percent CO2 over the entire service life. The ECOTAP® VI thus enables a smaller transformer with the same power or up to 30 percent more power in an existing transformer.

The increasing feed-in of volatile, renewable energy and the shutdown of voltage-regulating fossil-fuel power plants are placing an enormous strain on the existing grid infrastructure. At the same time, some of the operating equipment is reaching critical points in its life cycle and will soon need to be replaced. Added to this is the shortage of skilled workers and the loss of expertise due to generational change.
Digitalization can help to ensure that existing and new equipment can handle the rapidly changing requirements. For example, digitized transformers can be monitored much more precisely, even from a distance, which makes it easier for asset management to control maintenance work, and saves resources as service personnel do not have to travel to the transformer for every little action. The ongoing status analyses are also more accurate and the action recommendations more precise than for transformers without digitalization.
Example 2: ETOS®, MSENSE® and TESSA® APM
Example 2: ETOS®, MSENSE® and TESSA® APM
Intelligent MSENSE® sensors monitor equipment precisely and independently. When linked to the ETOS® automation solution, in which all measured values converge, they provide managers with detailed data and enable specific recommendations for action. This makes maintenance more targeted, efficient and resource saving.
And because ETOS® was designed to be interface compatible, sensors can be integrated regardless of manufacturer using a simple plug-and-play principle. In order to monitor entire fleets, we have developed TESSA® APM, a software which learns continuously and provides precise action recommendations during ongoing condition monitoring.
