Germany is generally known for its reliable power grid. However, a non- representative survey of around a thousand companies conducted by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) in 2024 revealed that 42% of respondents had experienced short power outages of less than three minutes. Such short interruptions are not even recorded in the official statistics, but for industrial companies in particular just a few milliseconds are enough to severely disrupt production processes, and the financial impact can be considerable.

When every second counts: How MR can help with power outages in industry
A recent survey has shown that short-term power outages in companies are more common than expected and that many of those affected are not even aware of the reasons for the interruptions. MR Power Quality helps with root cause analysis and develops individual solutions to counter grid problems.
When every second counts: How MR can help with power outages in industry
A recent survey has shown that short-term power outages in companies are more common than expected and that many of those affected are not even aware of the reasons for the interruptions. MR Power Quality helps with root cause analysis and develops individual solutions to counter grid problems.
Whether car manufacturers, machine builders or steelworks - industry is highly technical across all sectors. These days most processes are automated, and systems work more precisely and efficiently than ever before thanks to power electronics. However, this also makes companies much more susceptible to power fluctuations or voltage interruptions with production downtime and machine damage then quickly leading to high costs. This was also shown by the DIHK survey: For a third of the companies surveyed, even short power outages caused costs of up to € 10,000, 15% incurred losses of € 10,000 to € 100,000 euros, and 2% even had costs of over € 100,000. The DIHK survey also showed that the causes of the power outages were unknown to a good two thirds of those affected.
Frequency and costs of power outages
Comprehensive Power Quality consulting
The Power Quality experts at MR specialize in precisely such problems. They develop solutions to make industrial networks more reliable, and can look back on years of experience and hundreds of successfully implemented projects. Michael Schmidt, Head of Power Quality Projects at MR, explains: "All companies that work with sensitive regulation and control systems need a very stable power supply." A machine failure does not always have to be caused by a power outage; voltage fluctuations or network faults due to harmonics can also paralyze a plant network. The active and passive filter solutions from Power Quality offer effective protection in such cases. "We don't supply off-the-shelf products, but rather develop solutions that are individually tailored to a customer's problem," says Schmidt.

„All companies that work with sensitive regulation and control systems need a very stable energy supply.“

The first step in solving a problem is therefore to investigate the cause: "First, we ask the customer exactly what has happened, which gives us some initial clues. We then carry out extensive measurements," explains Schmidt. After this analysis, the Power Quality experts propose a technical solution, which is then produced individually to meet the respective customer requirements. Installation by authorized partners and commissioning are also part of the service. In this way, customers receive a complete solution package from a single source.
Causes of power outages according to DIHK survey
of the businesses that responded had power outages lasting less than three minutes.
of respondents saw network operators as the cause.
attributed the failures to thunderstorms.
cited grid fluctuations as the cause.
of the affected companies were unable to identify a cause.
New solution to voltage dips
The Power Quality team recently developed a so-called Uninterruptible Ultra Fast Power Storage (UUPS) system for a customer in Canada specifically for short-term voltage dips of up to one second. In the event of a voltage drop, the system - consisting of battery storage and capacitors - reacts within milliseconds. Operation is automatically decoupled from the power grid via an electronic switch and the UUPS feeds power directly into the factory grid via an inverter. "The UUPS that we designed and installed can feed up to 15 megawatts into the grid for one second," says Schmidt. If the trend towards short-term power outages continues, solutions like this will become increasingly important. "Such a solution is not only interesting for large companies, but is also particularly suitable for medium-sized businesses," explains Schmidt.
