Siemens Development Partnership
Reliable Power for AI Data Centers
Reinhausen and Siemens are developing a special transformer to meet the requirements of the AI era.
Through a strategic partnership, Siemens and Reinhausen (MR) are driving the future of power supply solutions for AI data centers. To this end, the companies are jointly developing a solid-state transformer (SST) and will begin serial production of it.
“Combining the technological strengths of Siemens and MR will shape the future of power supply solutions for AI data centers around the world. Solid-state transformers play a key role in these large, energy-intensive facilities. They enable higher efficiency, direct DC conversion from the grid to the rack, and a smaller footprint,” says Stephan May, CEO Electrification and Automation at Siemens, summarizing the project’s significance.
Actively shaping a paradigm shift
"With a century of innovation and experience in the fields of power quality and grid stability, Reinhausen is the ideal development partner for the transition into a new era with new requirements,” says Wilfried Breuer, Managing Director and Spokesperson for the Executive Management of Reinhausen GmbH.
"The AI era requires a new paradigm in power supply. We are proud to be actively shaping this transformation together with Siemens. Our technology enables AI data centers to operate with the necessary efficiency and agility."
Wilfried Breuer, Managing Director and Spokesperson for the Executive Management of Reinhausen GmbH
Transformers and control systems are becoming strategic factors
Data centers that provide the computing power needed for artificial intelligence are among the most demanding power consumers: Extreme load spikes within a few seconds can affect servers, storage systems, and cooling systems, thereby reducing data center performance – and even leading to outages. As system-critical equipment, transformers and their control systems thus become a strategic factor. “When dynamics and availability become the most important indicators of economic efficiency, we – as the world’s leading manufacturer of voltage regulation technology – are right in our element. With our extensive expertise in power electronics, we look forward to collaborating once again on development with our long-standing partner Siemens,” says Mr. Breuer.
Reinhausen brings to the partnership in-depth expertise and experience in the areas of voltage regulation, power electronics, power supply solutions, and digitalization. When deploying SSTs, Siemens leverages its expertise in grid integration, power supply solutions, power conversion, protection, and control to deliver next-generation energy systems for AI data centers.
Siemens combines deep expertise in power electronics, electrical power solutions, grid protection and automation systems as well as digitalization. In the deployment of SSTs, Siemens applies its capabilities in grid integration, power conversion, protection and control to deliver the next-generation energy systems for AI data centers.
What is an SST?
A solid-state transformer (SST) is a transformer that combines traditional transformer technology with modern power electronics and digital control. This enables it to monitor and actively control current flows in real time. This ensures a highly flexible power supply with very high power density, even under the extreme load fluctuations typical of modern AI data centers. From today’s perspective, however, SSTs will not replace conventional transformers with tap changers, but will instead complement them in certain demanding applications. To put it succinctly:
Transformers and on-load tap-changers reliably and effectively transmit and regulate current within fixed ranges. An SST actively and highly dynamically controls how the current is delivered.
About Reinhausen
Reinhausen is a family-owned company founded in 1868 and headquartered in Regensburg. In 1926, the company filed a patent for the high-speed resistor-type tap-changer, which forms the basis of its current business.
Today, Reinhausen employs approximately 5,500 people, generates annual revenue of 1.5 billion euros, and is represented by 50 subsidiaries at 57 locations in 27 countries. The company’s innovative solutions regulate about half of the electricity consumed worldwide.
