Between dynamic grids, global markets and an almost unthinkable number of digitalization solutions, complexity in the transformer industry is increasing. Jürgen Ach, Director of Automation at Reinhausen, sees major opportunities for manufacturers, however.

When the concept of power grids was developed in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, the energy universe was less complex. Power consumption was volatile, but generation in combination with a control reserve was predictable. Today, thanks to renewable power supply, generators are also prone to fluctuations. In addition, due to the electrification of other branches of industry – most notably mobility – future grids will have to transport many more times this at the high end. Since grids cannot simply be expanded as desired, new approaches to grid management and intelligent equipment are needed. This transition is already in full swing, and also places high demands on transformer manufacturers.

Own team serves strong demand

MR establishes cooperations with several transformer manufacturers

GANZ Transformers and Electric Rotating Machines Ltd. and Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen have enjoyed a cooperation since April 2022. At that time, the Hungarian pioneer company in transformer technology approached MR with the desire to position itself as a digital solution provider through cooperation. 12 months later, GANZ Intelligent Solutions - based on Reinhausen's ISM® platform - has already established itself in the market and end customer demand for it is strong. The benefits of the cooperation have also generated strong demand in the market of transformer manufacturers, which is now being realized in concrete projects.

Why data centers (may) never fail

The Internet, streaming services, user accounts, communications software, operating systems, cloud storage -- our digitized world uses vast amounts of data every day, which are stored and processed in large data centers. They are part of the critical infrastructure, because even a small disruption can have a global impact. These huge storage facilities and computers consume enormous amounts of energy - also for constant cooling. And because everything must run trouble-free around the clock, all these centers have their own power supplies. ETOS® helps operators guarantee an optimal, uninterrupted power supply.

Consumer market operates its own direct current network with MR technology

Innovative pilot project in Bavaria

In future, the energy for the Buchbauer Group's new consumer market in Hunding, Bavaria, will come from the roof, while heat will be supplied by the company's own geothermal system. As a special service, customers will be able to charge their electric cars while shopping, also fed from the photovoltaic system.

The energy transition is also making progress in South America. Brazil, Chile and Colombia in particular are investing heavily in the expansion of wind and solar power plants. In order for these to be connected to the grid, the grid infrastructure must be converted and smart transformers must be installed.

South America's champions of the energy transition

Huge, sparsely populated areas, steady winds from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, plus plateaus and deserts with intense sunlight make South America an attractive location for wind and solar farms. According to the Global Energy Monitor, the region has the potential to become the world leader in renewable energies. If all announced, planned and under construction plants in Latin America (Mexico, Central America, Caribbean and South America) are added together, 319 GW of new generating capacity will be connected to the grid by 2030. This represents an increase of 460 percent.

DC Partner Days in Berlin

In addition to various specialist presentations, the main focus was on extensive networking. The event was held at the new office in the former Tegel Airport in Berlin.

300 gigawatts of electricity are to be produced by offshore wind turbines in the North Sea by 2050. The North Sea Wind Power Hub program has paved the way for this. And with its maritime solutions, MR offers the right technologies for reliable operation.

The North Sea as Europe's green power plant

Steady winds, shallow water depths and a geographically favorable location - the North Sea is predestined for the construction of offshore wind farms. Currently, wind farms with a total output of 30 gigawatts are installed, most of them close to the coast. However, in order to realize the expansion plans, the wind turbines will have to move further out to sea. But how will the electricity then reach people on land? Torben Glar Nielsen, former CTO of Energinet, and Wilfried Breuer, Managing Director of MR, came up with the idea of building artificial islands for distribution, and for this purpose together with other companies they launched the North-Sea Wind Power Hub program in 2017.

Acquisition of former Joint Venture Easun-MR Tap Changers (Pvt.) Ltd. in India

With effect from February 1, 2024, Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH (MR) has acquired all the remaining shares of Easun-MR Tap Changers (Pvt.) Ltd. (EMR), a former joint venture company that has been operating successfully for almost 30 years in India. This acquisition turns EMR into a wholly owned subsidiary of MR without changing its independent market task. The Management of EMR will remain in the trusted hands of R. Ravikumar and R. Prakash who will continue their strategy of market leadership in India.

No steel without electricity - but the purchase of new transformers costs a lot of time and money. The employees at thyssenkrupp in Duisburg therefore rely on the TESSA® FLEETSCAN 2D evaluation system from MR.

Digital transformer check: MR provides training at thyssenkrupp's steelworks

thyssenkrupp operates Europe's largest steel mill in Duisburg and is actively working on CO2-free steel production as well as the sustainability of its production. This includes ensuring the longevity of its equipment. The digital consulting approach TESSA® FLEETSCAN 2D from MR will help with this in the future. Philipp Birgmeier is a technical consultant at MR and explains: "In some countries, transformers are operated under higher loads and replaced at an early stage. This no longer works given the current delivery times and is not a particularly sustainable approach."
