Circuit Breaker Condition Assessment – 3 Levels

The Circuit Breaker Condition Assessment is based on a modular 3 Level approach that aims to maximise data quality while minimising shutdown times.

Level 1: Data collection in operation, using already available Data

Database:
+ Technical Data
+ Historical Data
+ FAT/SAT

Data Evaluation:
+ Identification of units with high data uncertainty
+ Grouping

Results:
+ Quality of results depends on data quality
+ Prioritized recommendations for actionand action plans
+ Modernization and life-extendingmeasures

Level 2: Data collection in operation, collection of new data by Reinhausen

Database:
+ Visual Inspection
+ IR thermography

Data Evaluation:
+ Identification of clusters and critical units

Results:
+ Mapping in the 2D-Matrix with Lifetime Consumption Index & Failure Risk Index

Level 3: Data collection out of operation, collection of new data by Reinhausen

Database:
+ Full condition assessment
(Visual inspection, IR thermography, SF6 Analysis & leak detection, Electrical measurements)

Data Evaluation:
+ Comprehensive data evaluation

Results:
+ Mapping in the 2D-Matrix with Lifetime Consumption Index & Failure Risk Index

Visual Inspection

Part of Level 2 & 3

Visual inspections are an important part of condition assessment. The visual inspection allows potential problems to be detected early, thereby ensuring reliable service of your equipment over the long term. The visual inspection can be performed immediately without any great effort after service work has been carried out. This eliminates additional service call charges.

IR Thermography

Part of Level 2 & 3

Surface temperatures can be determined fast and non-invasive using a thermographic measurement. Thermal radiation, invisible to the human eye, is converted by the thermographic camera into visible thermal images. The measurement process is used to identify anomalies and damage to your circuit breaker that cannot be determined through other methods. Regular thermographic examination can prevent personal injury and property damage and reduce the failure risk of your system.

SF₆ Analysis

Part of Level 3

The analysis of sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) gas is a reliable and established method for evaluating the condition of gas-insulated circuit breakers. Using diagnostic devices, we perform SF₆ gas analysis directly in the field, enabling fast and efficient condition assessment without the need for immediate lab involvement.
In addition to detecting decomposition products and gas quality, our analysis also identifies moisture content, which is a critical indicator of insulation performance and potential internal contamination. If critical or abnormal results are found, we offer further analysis in accredited laboratories to ensure precise diagnostics and well-founded recommendations for action.

Electrical Tests

Part of Level 3

Electrical measurements are a proven and essential method for evaluating the condition and performance of circuit breakers. These tests provide critical insights into mechanical and electrical integrity, helping to detect wear, aging, or potential failures before they lead to downtime. Using our advanced diagnostic equipment, we perform a range of specialized measurements directly on-site, including for example:

+ Timing Analysis – to assess the switching behavior and synchronization between phases

+ Dynamic Resistance Measurement (DRM) and Motion Analysis – to evaluate the condition of arcing contacts during operation and to monitor travel curves, speed, and acceleration of moving parts for mechanical health assessment

+ Coil Analysis – to check the integrity and response of operating coils

+ Motor Analysis – to evaluate motor performance, current draw, and mechanical behavior during operation
