thyssenkrupp operates Europe's largest steel mill in Duisburg and is actively working on CO2-free steel production as well as the sustainability of its production. This includes ensuring the longevity of its equipment. The digital consulting approach TESSA® FLEETSCAN 2D from MR will help with this in the future. Philipp Birgmeier is a technical consultant at MR and explains: "In some countries, transformers are operated under higher loads and replaced at an early stage. This no longer works given the current delivery times and is not a particularly sustainable approach."

No steel without electricity - but the purchase of new transformers costs a lot of time and money. The employees at thyssenkrupp in Duisburg therefore rely on the TESSA® FLEETSCAN 2D evaluation system from MR.

Efficient in-house data collection
With a share of just under 10 percent, Duisburg-based Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe is of central importance for German steel production. The company employs around 26,000 people and is the leading manufacturer of flat steel in Germany, with an annual production of around 11 million tons of crude steel. A total of 68 medium and high-voltage transformers comprise the fleet of the steelworks in Duisburg. Some of these transformers are already at an advanced age, and new purchases can take up to four years due to supply bottlenecks. As the failure of a transformer represents a considerable financial risk in the industry, the condition of the equipment is regularly assessed.
MR offers the TESSA® FLEETSCAN 2D consulting approach with associated web application for this purpose. Normally, MR's specialists first collect measurement data from the transformers using thermal imaging cameras, among other things. They then evaluate the collected data and give the customer a condition and fleet report together with clear recommendations for action which can also be viewed at any time in a web application. At thyssenkrupp, however, there are many highly qualified specialists in the plant who wanted to record the data required to assess the condition of the transformers with FLEETSCAN 2D themselves. MR therefore provided training on its tool for the first time.
„The core objective of the practical training was to teach colleagues how to use the tool in order to enable them to visually inspect the thermal images“
Fabian Marquardt, Engineer High Voltage Technology and Network Planning at thyssenkrupp
Europe's steel industry
The German steel industry ranks seventh worldwide and Germany is the largest steel producer in the EU with a market share of 25 percent. 5,200 companies with around 500,000 employees belong to the steel industry in Germany, with almost half of these companies producing in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The steel industry in NRW has almost 45,500 employees, which accounts for a full 54 percent of the steel workforce in Germany.
Duisburg is the largest steel location in Europe and therefore plays a decisive role in the German steel industry. A total of 16 million tons of crude steel are produced there, which corresponds to an impressive 38 percent of Germany's total production.
Cooperation for optimal transformer testing
Cooperation for optimal transformer testing
The FLEETSCAN-2D specialists from MR conducted a two-day, hands-on training course at the steelworks during which they explained the transformer inspection service process to the employees. The thyssenkrupp specialists were then able to inspect their equipment in accordance with MR's specifications and the MR specialists then evaluated the collected data. This close collaboration will also help to increase the efficiency and sustainability of steel production in the future as part of the energy transition. "The aim is to enable faults in the transformer station to be repaired at short notice instead of suffering a total loss," explains Fabian Marquardt. He continues: "The practical training was intended to teach colleagues how to use the tool in order to enable them to visually inspect the thermal images." To promote a standardized approach to assessing the condition of systems, MR can imagine also establishing the procedure first tested at thyssenkrupp at other customers.
The main advantages at a glance:
-
Maintenance strategy:
With the help of the failure risk index and the lifetime consumption index, MR can derive a maintenance strategy based on the fleet condition.
-
Fleet condition:
TESSA®FLEETSCAN 2D provides an accurate picture of the condition of the operating equipment, which can be seen at a glance via the associated software. Critical units are detected in good time.
-
Early alarm function:
MR's MSENSE® DGA2 sensors are used for online hydrogen detection and detect even gradual increases in the hydrogen content in the oil at an early stage. This helps to prevent serious faults in the transformer.
-
Clear recommendations for action:
MR prepares a detailed inspection report for each transformer after evaluating the measured data, as well as a fleet report that assesses the condition of all assets in their entirety. The reports contain prioritized recommendations for maintenance and repair of the individual units and can be viewed in the app at any time.
