Get the most out of Green H2 - with proven MR Solutions

The big goal is to keep global warming within tolerable limits. To achieve this, experts say that CO2 emissions must be reduced to zero by 2050 at the latest. Mankind therefore only has around 25 years left to stop burning fossil fuels such as gas and oil. The most important strategy of the states and private actors is called "electrification." But that alone is far from enough. It also needs a rapid and gigantic expansion of hydrogen infrastructure. MR has had experience with the production of hydrogen since 1992: the combination of vacuum on-load tap-changers and perfectly matched power quality solutions will facilitate the expansion.

10,000 VRDT - the new standard in the distribution grid?

The use of on-load tap-changers in voltage regulating distribution transformers (VRDT) has proven to be a particularly economical solution both in Germany and internationally. Thanks to its compact design, maintenance-free operation and simple installation, ECOTAP® VPD® from Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen has established itself with many grid operators as one of the cornerstones for increasing the hosting capacity for generators and loads in the distribution grid. In February 2024, MR will deliver the 10,000^th ECOTAP® VPD®, underlining the statement that the third generation of the ECOTAP® VPD® makes voltage regulation for distribution transformers.

The North Sea as Europe's green power plant

Steady winds, shallow water depths and a geographically favorable location - the North Sea is predestined for the construction of offshore wind farms. Currently, wind farms with a total output of 30 gigawatts are installed, most of them close to the coast. However, in order to realize the expansion plans, the wind turbines will have to move further out to sea. But how will the electricity then reach people on land? Torben Glar Nielsen, former CTO of Energinet, and Wilfried Breuer, Managing Director of MR, came up with the idea of building artificial islands for distribution, and for this purpose together with other companies they launched the North-Sea Wind Power Hub program in 2017.

thyssenkrupp operates Europe's largest steel mill in Duisburg and is actively working on CO2-free steel production as well as the sustainability of its production. This includes ensuring the longevity of its equipment. The digital consulting approach TESSA® FLEETSCAN 2D from MR will help with this in the future. Philipp Birgmeier is a technical consultant at MR and explains: "In some countries, transformers are operated under higher loads and replaced at an early stage. This no longer works given the current delivery times and is not a particularly sustainable approach."

Taiwan Power Company (TPC) has been using online oil analysis equipment to monitor the condition of its transformer fleet for many years. However, the old systems are inefficient and are now very susceptible to failure. For the new DGA monitoring, TPC wanted a powerful system and therefore chose MSENSE® DGA from MR.

Clean solar power – one of the most important pillars of the energy transition. More and more private households are now producing their own green electricity. But how worthwhile are supplementary individual battery storage systems compared to municipal solutions?

Sunny prospects: Municipal solar storage devices

Solar panels can be found on the roofs of more and more cities and communities. In Germany alone, solar systems with a total capacity of around 60 GW (gigawatts) were installed at the beginning of 2021 – equivalent to the output of around 60 large power plants! By 2035, the installed capacity is even expected to increase to around 200 GW. This would mean that the power grid would have more capacity than it does now, including electricity from nuclear and coal-fired power plants. But solar power is produced during the day, and mainly consumed in the morning and evening – so where should the excess electricity at midday be stored?

Putting an End to Harmonics in Industries

The power grids of industrial plants have changed dramatically over the past two decades. In the past, the primary concern was still reactive power compensation to ensure that the voltage would remain stable and transmission losses would be reduced. These machines are very energy-efficient, but the power electronics have negative impacts on the grid. The more these types of drives are used, the more harmonics occur.

After passing their final exams, they received their certificates from Managing Director Wilfried Breuer. Together with their instructors, the graduates were delighted with an outstanding grade point average of 1.7, which once again speaks for the high quality of training at MR. Eva Kaiser also received an award as the best electronics technician for industrial engineering in the Chamber of Industry and Commerce's district.

Retrofit: Breathing new life into old transformers thanks to new tap changers

A power transformer that has been in use for many years is like a person: It ages and needs more regular health checkups. Over time, this cost adds up – especially if the transformer requires replacement parts that are no longer available or are hard to come by.

If a de-energized tap-changer has to maintain a huge test voltage of 1,000 kV and switch 112 kV in a single step, you need real experts. That is why Canadian transformer manufacturer PTI came to Reinhausen.

Oversized de-energized tap-changers

Canadian transformer manufacturer PSI Transformers received the order to replace a transformer for a hydropower station. The new transformer had to be able to switch between one transmission line at 250 kV and another at 143 kV. The test voltage required was a massive 1,000 kV. "To build a tap-changer for such extreme requirements, from our point of view, there was only one supplier we wanted to work with – and that was Reinhausen," states George Partyka Jr., Vice President of PTI Transformers.

Full control and intelligent regulation of transformers

For the steel industry in particular, a loss of production is associated with enormous costs. To prevent its transformers from malfunctioning, the Italian steel company ABS (Acciaieria Bertoli Safau) carries out regular inspections. GE OLTC replacement by VACUTAP® RMV-II in Mexican Cement Plant

Mission in the Mexican jungle: Sociedad Cooperativa Cruz Azul, a cement company with almost 90 years of history in México, needed to modernize two old GE transformers at its plant in Lagunas Oaxaca. The problem: the OLTCs in the transformers were defective and the original manufacturer no longer produces them. Furthermore, neither service nor spare parts are available on the market for such OLTCs. This was therefore a job for the service specialists of Reinhausen Mexico (RMX) and the VACUTAP® RMV-II.

The MR EXPIOTECH MMS Moisture Management System prevents premature failure of transformers at a steel works

Intelligent Transformer Drying

Alongside increased winding and oil temperatures, the moisture content in the oil is one of the most critical factors that can massively shorten the service life of a transformer, since both temperature and moisture can damage the paper insulation and therefore also have a negative effect on the thermal insulating properties. A Chinese steel works experienced this first hand at the end of 2018, when moisture levels triggered early warnings. Thanks to the MR EXPIOTECH MMS Moisture Management System, they were able to reduce the moisture content and prevent their transformers from failing prematurely.

First UVT-LTX Retrofit Project in Mexico

In August 2018, Reinhausen Mexico (RMX) successfully completed the first UVT-LTX retrofit project in Mexico in order to help a company located in the Mexican state of Nuevo León which was having problems with a UVT on-load tap-changer manufactured by Westinghouse in 1981. The UVT needed to be repaired because the aged vacuum interrupters were causing disruptions of the monitoring system.
