"The IEC 61850 standard does offer a uniform communication standard for exchanging information, but there are only a few devices in the medium and low-voltage range that meet the standard," says Dr. Kai Strübbe, Head of TÜV SÜD AG's Embedded Systems department. After UCA accreditation of its Test Lab for Intelligent Energy Technology in Munich, experts from the international service provider can award "IEC 61850 Conformance" certificates in order to advance development further. For manufacturers, the certificate is visible proof that their products meet the communication requirements of IEC 61850 and can be integrated into a smart grid.
TÜV SÜD used its first "IEC 61850 Conformance" certificate to recognize the TAPCON® 230 voltage regulator from MR. "The TAPCON® 230 series combines our comprehensive expertise with maximum customer benefits thanks to quick installation, easy operation and flexible communication options", explains Jürgen Schwarz, Head of Automation & Control at MR. "I'm happy to see we have achieved certification via TÜV SÜD for the device series, which we can also use to visibly document our edge in the market."
The product was certified based on extensive simulation tests in TÜV SÜD's Test Lab for Intelligent Energy Technology in Munich used to inspect the the TAPCON® 230 series' conformity with IEC 61850. "Successful certification by TÜV SÜD gives us independent confirmation that our implementation conforms to the standard and meets the prerequisites for the interoperability of our devices with all of a substation control system's components", emphasizes Schwarz. "Certification underscores MR's pioneering role in substation automation and gives us a significant advantage among international competition."
