VACUTAP® VR® Retrofit Solutions for Japan Successfully Completed

MR expands its solutions for life-time extension and maintenance-cost reduction for aging power transformers in Japan.

Regulated power transformers are one of the most expensive assets of electric power companies and must therefore remain in operation for as long as possible. While the use target has been 30 to 40 years in the past, today transformer operators want 50 to 60 years and in Japan even up to 70 years are expected! This is possible – with retrofit solutions from MR.

In addition to enabling a life-time extension, retrofit solutions also can potentially lower the total costs of operation. For example, if the operator of a large regulated power transformer could use a maintenance-free vacuum type on-load tap-changer (OLTC) rather than an oil-immersed OLTC, the maintenance costs for this transformer component would be reduced to zero in the future.

Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR) has been offering relevant retrofit solutions for quite a while. The diverter switch inserts (DSI) of MR’s OILTAP® M, which have been manufactured since 1973 and include those manufactured by licensees, can easily be replaced by VACUTAP® VM® DSIs. For more than 10 years, it has also been possible to replace OILTAP® T and R DSIs using glass-fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) oil compartments by VACUTAP® VR® DSIs and MR’s Japanese service company, Reinhausen Solutions Co., has carried out a number of such projects.

But many Japanese electric power companies have even greater demands and MR has recently expanded its portfolio with suitable solutions to meet these increased expectations. For example, the VACUTAP® VR® DSI can now also be retrofitted to OILTAP® T OLTCs with oil compartments made from laminated paper (which also applies for units manufactured by licensees) and MR has successfully finished the necessary type tests in this regard in accordance with the relevant standard JEC 2220.
