How on-load tap-changers contribute to the supply of energy?
The functional principle of the tap-changer is best explained as follows: imagine an automobile equipped with automatic gearing and cruise control climbing a hill. Cruise control maintains the speed once it is set, the automatic gearing then gears up or down depending on the grading. The tap-changer in a transformer (the car) works in the same way. If the values specified by a voltage regulator (cruise control) are exceeded or fall below during times of high or low power consumption (hilly road), the tap-changer (gearing) switches from one transformer winding to the next appropriate one in a fraction of a second. This ensures that the voltage remains constant.
On-load tap-changers and the related electronics components are not products commonly purchased 'off-the-rack'.
