There are two aspects to onshore wind power. Firstly medium voltage grids have to absorb fluctuating feed-in volumes from individual wind turbines. If the load is too high, voltage regulated distribution transformers stabilize the line voltage. Secondly there are huge wind farms with a capacity of up to one gigawatt and more, which have to be efficiently integrated into the grid. In the collector stations which link the turbines to form generator clusters, the tap-changers switch on a very frequent basis and over a wide voltage range to compensate for the fluctuating amounts of power. Many wind farms are also installed in locations highly sensitive to pollution. These need transformers which are hermetically sealed or which use environmentally-friendly and flame-retardant isolating fluids. What's more, wind power is often generated at great distances from most consumers. The existing grid infrastructure is subject to frequent switching operations, making high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission a real alternative.
