In the various different manufacturing procedures for steel, steel production using arc furnaces poses the main challenges for power supply to the smelting works. The smelting process using an electrical arc must be ideally regulated to achieve the highest level of efficiency in production. A crucial regulating parameter is the arc voltage, which can be influenced by the tap-changer in the furnace transformer. A powerful tap-changer with several steps in the furnace transformer is therefore essential, as it ensures the process-related voltage regulation of the transformer and thus the optimum melting duration. In particular, our on-load tap-changers can control the higher overload that is caused by the discontinuous current flow.

In addition, a high number of mill rotations can occur in the rolling mills, which are used in steel processing and thus may cause higher number of on-load tap-changer switching operations of the supplying transformer. Furthermore, mains feedback such as flickers occur in the power supply system as a result of load fluctuations and harmonics (converters), due to the drives in the mills. These mains feedbacks can be reduced by installing static and/or dynamic compensation systems meeting the demands of the network provider. This requires thyristor controls or IGBT compensators, in addition to filter circuit systems.
